Silent Saboteurs: Exposing the 3 Default Goal-Setting Mistakes

mind relationships work Jun 24, 2023

Earlier this week I was speaking with a client when they asked me…

Are you are someone who has big dreams, aspirations and visions but can struggle to follow through on their word?

Are you are someone who has big dreams, aspirations and visions but can struggle to follow through on their word?

Or maybe you are great at  working hard and hustling but you feel you aren't making enough progress…

Make sure you read this email and download this fillable tool to change for good.

5 years ago my performance was up and down - medical teaching awards one minute and patient complaints the next.

I was like a reactive pinball. I would berate myself, get lost in thought and feel like I was the only one who was struggling.

This lack of self-compassion had a ripple effect:

- I struggled to complete projects

- I didn't know with clarity what my next step was

- I was being inconsistent with the habits that mattered

My dopamine systems, like most of us these days, were completely out of alignment.

I knew that there must be another way to consistently accomplish with more speed and ease.

At first, I learnt about behavioural change and habit principles through Lifestyle Medicine, BJ Fogg and Nir Eyal. They were helpful but seemed to require a lot of energy.

Then I learnt about managing my emotions with compassion, mindfulness and mind-body practices. Again, this was phenomenally valuable but something was still missing

It was only when I learnt through transformational coaching to master my energy, shift my identity and design my environment, that I saw more lasting change.

Since embodying the principles I am going to share with you, I feel blessed to say that I’ve seen a significant increase in revenue, speaking opportunities and the attraction of beautiful aligned inspirational clients with our work spreading across five continents.

More to the point, I have accomplished this whilst working around half the hours that I did last year (16-20 hours/week).

And since using this tool, my clients have gone from:

- Near burnout and zero confidence to dozens of millions in deals

- Painful unfulfilling relationships to finding beautiful loving inspirational people

- Hating their corporate work to finding their purpose work

In my experience, the tool is a powerful fusion of:

- The mystical with the conventional

- The intuitive with the logical

- The spiritual with the scientific

This seems to work so powerfully.

You need BOTH the flow of the river and the banks to guide you with ease to your destination.

Here are 3 mistakes I see most people make when it comes to setting goals:

1. Don’t Create Goals, Create Intentions

An intention is a desire without attachment. Your attachment is holding you back. Set an intention to continually work towards. You are complete without the goal, never forget that.

Research shows that setting intentions is a powerful way to engage your dopamine system in the anticipation of a reward.

Create daily intentions based upon a long term vision, forget 'goals'. Focus on the feelings; everything else is irrelevant.

2. Don’t Delay Your Dreams, Commit Today

I feel blessed to work with some extremely high-performing clients - executive coaches, VCs and 8-figure entrepreneurs.

They share certain qualities - they are decision makers, implementers and they understand the concept of time.

Most of us delay our joy, our dreams and our visions because we cannot see HOW.

Start today, however small - the Universe loves courage and opens up to those with an open heart.

From a scientific point of view, the heart has a powerful magnetic field that, when you are focused on love, gratitude and compassion, people can FEEL. Try doing more of what you LOVE today.

3. Don’t focus on the outcomes, focus on the process

This is a mantra I often speak about with my clients. But how do you focus on the process? Firstly, understand that you cannot completely control your environment, only how you FEEL about it.

Create your own measuring sticks. Measure your work based only on you - this is the concept of lead outcomes versus lag outcomes.

If you are looking to make more sales, don't measure the sales, measure the time invested in making calls.

If you are writing a book, don't measure the words written and instead the time invested in writing.

If you are wanting to connect deeper with your family, don't measure their reactions only your actions.
